CHOOSING A DONOR WHO IS A ‘CARRIER’: WHAT TO EXPECT
Many donor banks extensively screen their donors for hundreds of genetic conditions.
If you have selected a donor who is a ‘carrier’ of one or more conditions, you may be asked to meet with a genetic counsellor from Igenomix UK to discuss the implications of proceeding with the donor and the option of having carrier genetic testing (CGT) yourself.
Your appointment will be held online via Microsoft Teams. Your genetic counsellor will review your personal and family medical history, and explain your donor’s genetic test result including what it means to be a carrier and some information on the specific condition(s) your donor is a carrier of. Your genetic counsellor will then support you in making a decision about whether you would like to proceed with genetic testing yourself to find out if you might be a carrier of the same genetic condition(s).
